The Ministry of Social and Family Development has announced yesterday that they are seeking consultants for the project to build picnic islands in all atolls of the country.

The announcement said that the government is seeking a party to provide consultancy for the 'Picnic Island Development Project'.

Interested parties can register for bidding ahead of 2pm on January 21, and can submit quotes before 10am on January 28, the announcement stated.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu pledged to establish a picnic island in each atoll in a community meeting in Mathiveri during his visit to Alif Alif atoll last August.

In his address, the President noted that having a dedicated picnic island would also contribute towards further developing tourism in the regions.

"We will designate one island from each atoll in Maldives, and dedicate it as a picnic island for the atoll's residents, guests staying at their guesthouses, and such," the President said then.

"It is very difficult for residents of islands, they have no options of an island to which they can go on picnics with their families. There is nowhere to take tourists either. So the government will develop one island in each atoll, we are conducting research for that," he said.

The President assured that the establishment of picnic islands in all atolls will be completed within this year.
