Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has warned today that action will be taken against unlicensed pharmacists and pharmacies.
In an announcement issued today, MFDA said that import and sale of medicine is only allowed under special permits.
They noted that in recent days, it has come to their attention that medicine is being sold at pharmacies without proper authorization.
MFDA reiterated that the sale of medication is strictly prohibited unless the pharmacy has obtained the required permit and the pharmacists involved are duly licensed.
The authority announced that it will be taken action against pharmacies and pharmacists acting in violation of this.
MFDA further reminded the public of personal responsibility when obtaining medication from pharmacies. As such, the MFDA urged the public to:
- Ensure pharmacies where they are having medication dispensed hold the necessary permits and have it displayed visibly
- Ensure pharmacists dispensing medication are properly licensed by checking if they are wearing the ID cards issued by MFDA
- Checking expiration dates on dispensed medication
- Verifying that usage instructions are clearly and accurately provided on dispensed medication
- Ensuring the dispensed medication is properly packed
For further information, the public can call the MFDA hotline 7200321.
