Noonu atoll has the highest number of thalassemia patients relative to its population, according to data shared by the Maldivian Blood Services (MBS).

MBS told Mihaaru News that 650 people were registered in the national Thalassemia Register as of the 10th of this month.

The largest age group among patients is those aged 11 to 20, accounting for 215 cases. The second-largest group is aged between 21 and 30.

Over the past four years, 40 new patients have been added to the register. These include 11 cases in 2023, 18 in 2024 and 11 in 2025.

Noonu atoll has a population of 12,503 across 13 islands, with 53 registered thalassemia patients. This represents an average of four patients per island, the highest rate in the country when adjusted for population size.

Faafu atoll ranks second, with 18 patients among a population of 6,911.

Laamu atoll has the third-highest number, with 43 patients in a population of 19,612.

According to MBS, no thalassemia patients are currently registered in Vaavu atoll, while Meemu atoll has the second lowest number, with just three patients.
