Mayor of Kulhudhuffushi City, Mohamed Athif, has announced his decision to seek a second term in office. Athif was first elected as Mayor on an MDP ticket in 2021.
In a video released yesterday to announce his candidacy, Athif stated that the upcoming council election presents a major question: whether to end the modern administrative governance currently established in the city or not. He also remarked that whether the people will choose those with a centralized mindset for council seats is another question facing the citizens.
"Will you vote in support of the government's current halt on development in Kulhudhuffushi? Will you surrender the power currently held by the city's residents to the government? Will you kneel before jobs, money, and influence?" Athif asked in his campaign launch video. He stated that it is impossible to continue down such a path.
Athif emphasized that the administrative power of Kulhudhuffushi must remain in the hands of its people and that this independence is crucial.

The Mayor added that the city's development projects would be planned and executed according to the wishes of the residents and in a way that benefits them. He assured that he would continue to stand with the people in this endeavor.
"Walk forward with me. A capable team that can run the council effectively will emerge with me; God willing, my name will be on the ballot in the upcoming local council election," Athif said.
Under Athif’s leadership, the Kulhudhuffushi City Council has recently carried out numerous projects, including the development of parks, public squares, beaches, and a public library.
The council also gained significant attention for its decisions to develop the area of the famous "Saturday Market" with greenery and to protect the historically significant "Tharijehi-ge."
While Athif has declared his candidacy for the Mayor's seat, the ruling PNC has not yet officially fielded a candidate for the position.
However, no primary was held by the PNC for this specific seat.
