The National Centre for Information Technology (NCIT) was dissolved thursday, and a separate entity named "Maldives Digital Service" has been established in its place.
The President's Office stated that this new agency was created to implement the "Maldives 2.0" roadmap for 2025-2028 and will operate under the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology.
Additionally, the President's Office confirmed that all responsibilities previously handled by NCIT will henceforth be managed by Maldives Digital Service.
To facilitate the transformation into a digital Maldives, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has also established a "Maldives Digital-First Nation" council.
The President previously mentioned that this council would be composed of experts in the field. He stated that one objective of digitalization is to ensure that services provided to citizens are conducted in a transparent manner. He further noted that the purpose of digitalization is to ensure services are delivered at maximum speed and efficiency, while also serving as a means to prevent corruption.
NCIT was originally established in 2003 during the administration of former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom to develop the IT sector in the Maldives.
