Stelco has begun operating a 1,200 kW generator in Vilimale’ in preparation for this year’s peak electricity season.
The company said the new generator will increase Vilimale’s electricity capacity, improve the reliability of power services, and provide greater convenience for residents.
Peak electricity demand in the Maldives typically occurs during Ramadan, which begins on 17 February this year.
Electricity consumption rises as people spend more time at home and less in schools and offices.
Last year, a new power plant was commissioned in Hulhumale' during Ramadan. Annex 2 of the Hulhumale' Power Station added 12 generator sets, each with a capacity of 1.6 MW.
