Fraudulent apartment rental leads to 18-month house arrest

A suspect has been sentenced to house arrest with a large fine for the rental of an apartment through fraud and deception.

The Criminal Court sentenced Ali Naseem, M. Green Peak in the case. The prosecution charged him with four counts of fraud and deception for fraudulent apartment rental.

The four charges cover the case where Ali Naseem had fraudulently charged tenants with exorbitant rental amounts for an apartment. He confessed to the charges during the trial.

Upon confessing to the crimes, he signed a plea agreement with the state drafted under the regulations. Under such an agreement, those who are charged with a crime will receive a lighter sentence.

The first charge that was placed upon Ali Naseem saw a prison sentence of 9 months and 18 days. This was changed to 8 months of house arrest along with an MVR 33,600 fine.

Ali Naseem has also been ordered to pay a sum of MVR 1,027,000 to those incurred losses in this case within 12 months.

Ali Naseem was sentenced to two months and 12 days in prison on a second charge, a term later reduced to two months of house arrest along with a fine of MVR 8,400. He was also ordered to repay the remaining advances taken from his victims, totaling MVR 286,500, within six months.

As for the third charge, Ali Naseem was sentenced to 4 months and 24 days in prison. This was later changed to 4 months of house arrest and a fine of MVR 5,200. He was ordered to pay MVR 35,000 in 6 months as compensation from the advance that has not been paid yet.

For the fourth charge, he was sentenced to 4 months and 24 days in prison, with it being changed to 4 months of house arrest and a fine of MVR 5,200. He has also been ordered to pay MVR 183,500 in 6 months as compensation.

And so, the punishment for all four charges against Ali Naseem totals 18 months of house arrest, with a fine of MVR 52,400. Ali Naseem also has to pay a total of MVR 1,532,000 as compensation.
