Statistics from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) have revealed that cases of flu in December 2025 were lower compared to December 2024, with dengue cases having increased last month.
As per HPA, the amount of flu cases in December totaled 28,619, with November seeing 32,859 flu cases compared to 30,590 flu cases in December 2024.
While flu cases have declined, air quality in the Maldives has deteriorated in the early phase of the Iruvai (Northeast) monsoon, with hazardous levels of haze affecting the nation in recent days.
HPA's statistics show that 560 influenza tests were done in December, with 152 positive results.
Cases of diarrhea also fell in December compared with November. According to statistics from HPA, 4,102 patients sought medical care for diarrhea in November, a figure that dropped to 2,931 in December.
While cases of diarrhea declined, dengue have risen compared with November and December 2025. There were 382 reported dengue cases in November, increasing to 413 in December. By contrast, the same months in 2024 saw a decrease of 150 dengue cases.
HPA has appealed to the public to take preventive and protective steps in order to reduce the spread of dengue, a disease spread by mosquitos.
