February 5, on which day President Dr Mohamed Muizzu will be delivering the Presidential Address at the inaugural sitting of the parliament, has been declared a public holiday.

The President's Office stated that the President declared February 5 a government holiday as the day on which the Presidential Address is delivered is traditionally observed as such in the Maldives. 

The Presidential Address is always delivered in the year's first sitting of the parliament. 

On February 5, the inaugural sitting of the first session of the third year of the 20th People's Majlis will be held. President Muizzu will be delivering his third Presidential Address this year. 

Although the first official sitting of the parliament has been scheduled for the first week of February, it is expected that the parliament will hold an extraordinary sitting ahead of this. 

The parliament, currently in recess, has held two extraordinary sittings, with a Constitutional amendment to merge the presidential and parliamentary elections submitted. The parliament aims to complete work on this amendment by January 15. 

Parliament Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla has previously stated that an extraordinary sitting will be held once the committee review of the bill of amendments is completed.
