Police have launched an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment made against Sofwan Ahmed, a coach at the Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM).
Sofwan had already been relieved of his professional duties last year while the association conducted an internal review into the matter.
According to information obtained by Mihaaru News, Sofwan, who also serves as an Executive Committee (ExCo) member of VAM, is accused of attempting to coerce a female player into an illicit sexual relationship through intimidation.
In response to inquiries within the police media group, authorities confirmed today that they have been made aware of a sexual offense case involving an individual responsible for training athletes at a national sports association.
While the police verified that the investigation is active, they did not provide specific details regarding the evidence or the identity of the accused at this stage. They further noted that no arrests have been made in connection with the case so far.
Following these allegations, VAM has reassigned the responsibilities of the national women’s team coach to volleyball legend Ahmed Nadheem.
The association had previously moved to distance Sofwan from official activities to maintain the integrity of the sport while the legal and internal processes continue.
