The Yellowfin Tuna Fishermen's Union has stated today that it is a positive sign that MIFCO has begun purchasing small yellowfin tuna catch.

In a post on social media, the Union said that although MIFCO purchasing small and reject yellowfin tuna is a good start, they urge MIFCO to buy yellowfin tuna at the agreed price in line with the presidential pledge at the earliest.

Kan'duoiy giri was brought back into operation yesterday, and MIFCO began purchasing yellowfin tuna of minimum 15kg in weight.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony held there yesterday, Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam said that the government will work towards providing the best options.

Shiyam said that many families are involved in fisheries, and the government would provide assistance should they face hardship.

MIFCO CEO Farhath Shaheer said that yellowfin tuna will be bought at the rate of MVR 25 per kilo in the Male' area. In addition to this, skipjack tuna will also be purchased, he announced.

"This is a start. In the near future, we will introduce cold storage, sale of ice and fuel for fishermen here," he said.

"We are very prepared to provide service from the Kan'duoiy Giri facility in the way the government has decided."
