A political appointee is amongst the four individuals arrested yesterday in the police operation against drugs.
Police arrested four individuals yesterday in a special operation carried out in GA atoll and Male' targeting a network involved in drug trafficking and laundering of the proceeds.
All the arrestees hailed from GA. Vilin'gili. They are:
- Shaffah Latheef, 28, Shevonah, GA. Vilin'gili
- Ahmed Madheeh, 33, Muzikige, GA. Vilin'gili
- Ahmed Anaam Ibrahim, 30, Aizan, GA. Vilin'gili
- Nooruhnizam, 35, Araairuge, GA. Vilin'gili
Ahmed Anaam Ibrahim is a Senior Political Director at the Economic Ministry. Shaffah Latheef also previously served as a Senior Political Director at the Home Ministry.
When presented in court for their remand hearing, all except Nooruhnizam was remanded until the end of trial. Nooruhnizam was remanded for 15 days.
Police revealed that under the operation, 10 locations had been searched. They are yet to disclose details of any drugs found during these searches.
Under a major crackdown, Police in November arrested suspects from GA and GDh atoll who were accused of being involved in the drug trade. This operation was conducted based on intelligence reports that drugs were being smuggled into the country via sea. It saw 16 individuals from the two atolls being arrested, with 12kg of drugs being seized from them.
