Walk-in interviews are to be held seeking drivers for the government taxi line, which has been proposed to resolve the difficulties in seeking taxi service.

MTCC, tasked with establishing the taxi line, said that the walk-in interviews will be held from 10am to 6pm on Saturday at the Maafannu Bus Terminal.

MTCC announced in November last year that they are seeking 407 drivers, and received 366 applications. MTCC has not yet disclosed how many of them were hired.

The government decided to introduce a taxi line due to challenges faced by the public in obtaining taxis despite approximately 1,500 taxis being currently registered.

Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen previously stated that initially, 100 taxis would be brought into service. This would bring about a positive change, he said, adding that these taxis would include cars which can navigate through narrow streets.

MTCC will be using electric vehicles (EV) in their taxi line. The service will be provided through a special application, similar to Uber and Grab. The service will be available 24/7.
