Police have revealed the identities of four individuals arrested in a special operation targeting a large scale drug trafficking and money laundering network operating in Maldives.

The arrests were made under “Operation Alimagu,” conducted early Sunday morning in Gaafu Alifu Atoll and Malé, police said.

Those arrested are:

  • Shaffaah Latheef, 28, Shevona, Gaafu Alifu Villingili
  • Ahmed Madeeh, 33, Musikeege, Gaafu Alifu Villingili
  • Ahmed Anaam Ibrahim, 30, Aizan, Gaafu Alifu Villingili
  • Nooruh Nizam, 35, Araairuge, Gaafu Alifu Villingili

Police said the operation targeted a network allegedly involved in smuggling drugs into the country, distributing them, and laundering proceeds from the illegal trade.

When produced before the court for remand hearings, the judge ordered three of the suspects to be held in custody until the end of the trial. Nooruh Nizam was ordered to be remanded in custody for 15 days, police said.

According to police, 10 locations were searched during the operation. However, no details have been released regarding the type or quantity of drugs seized.

In November last year, authorities arrested two suspects linked to drug trafficking in Gaafu Alifu and Gaafu Dhaalu atolls. That operation followed an intelligence tip off indicating drugs were being smuggled into the country by sea, resulting in the arrest of 16 individuals.
