PNC gained 5,000 members in 25 days: Falah

Ibrahim Falah, the Parliamentary Group Leader of the People’s National Congress (PNC) Parliamentary Group, announced tonight that 5,000 people have joined the ruling party within the last 25 days. 

Historically, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) held the position of the largest party on the Elections Commission (EC) registry, with its membership exceeding 90,000 when the current administration took office. 

However, EC statistics now show that MDP’s membership has decreased to 43,784. Falah, who also represents the Inguraidhoo constituency, pointed out the stark transformation of the PNC, noting that just two years ago, the party had only about 3,000 members. 

Since President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu took leadership of the party, that number has surged to 74,048 members.

This surge is supported by comparing the EC's recent data releases. When the EC published political party funding details on December 6, 2024, the registry showed the PNC had 68,665 members as of November 25. 

By the end of December, that figure had climbed to 74,000. In contrast, latest figures from January 3, 2026, show that while the MDP saw a minor increase of 19 members rising from 43,765 to 43,784, almost all other political parties experienced a decline in membership.

The Jumhooree Party (JP) saw the most significant loss, with its membership dropping by 1,113 people, falling from 13,456 in late November to 12,343 today. 

Among other registered parties, the People's National Front (PNF) currently holds 3,012 members, while The Democrats' membership stands at 2,952.
