The Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has today announced a ban on the import and sale of several batches of Nestle’s "SMA" brand infant and follow-up formulas.
The MFDA stated that Nestle had identified the potential presence of a toxin in these products and issued an international alert to remove them from the market.
The contaminant in question is "Cereulide," a heat-stable toxin produced by the bacterium Bacillus cereus. If consumed, this toxin can lead to rapid food poisoning symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.
As a safety measure, the MFDA has prohibited the sale and distribution of the following specific products in the Maldives effective immediately:
- SMA Advanced First Infant Milk (800g)
- SMA Advanced Follow-on Milk (800g)
- SMA Anti-Reflux (800g)
- SMA Alfamino (400g)
- SMA First Infant Milk (400g, 800g, and 1.2kg)
- SMA Little Steps First Infant Milk (800g)
- SMA Comfort (800g)
- SMA First Infant (Ready-to-feed 200ml and 70ml)
- SMA Lactose-Free (400g)
Most of the affected batches include products with expiration dates reaching the end of this year.
