MIFCO has stated today that they are packaging 118,000 cases of tuna cans to be given away by the government as Ramadan gifts.
MIFCO Managing Director Faruhath Shaheer said that the company will be able to complete packaging these 118,000 cases of tuna cans by the Thursday next week.
The packaging efforts commenced last November, according to Shaheer.
"While we are processing this production, we began those efforts early so as to ensure it won't affect other orders. So no production schedules were affected this time. This is a huge achievement for us," Shaheer said.
Due to space constraints, MIFCO has worked in collaboration with STO and the Local Governance Ministry and stored over 30,000 cases at warehouses at the HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Port and Addu Hithadhoo Port, he said.
"This will also add convenience in distributing the cases in the atolls (in the north and south). We have now made arrangements to bring the remaining cases from Felivaru to the Male' area as instructed by the ministry."
The Local Governance Ministry works with island councils to arrange the distribution of tuna can cases to households.
Under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's directive, tuna can cases were issued to households during last Ramadan as well.
Ramadan last year saw the distribution of 111,231 tuna can cases by the government. This includes 50,519 cases to Male' area households, and 60,712 cases across the atolls.
The president has also decided to offer a special discount on electricity bills during this Ramadan. With this decision, households billed at the domestic rate will be issued bills capped at a maximum of MVR 400.
As per the calendar, Ramadan this year is set to begin on February 18.
