President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has today ratified the Re-Employment Bill, which extends the employment age in the public service to 75 years for those who do not wish to retire at the age of 65.
Extending the maximum age of employment is a presidential pledge of President Muizzu. These amendments were hence proposed to parliament, with the bill being passed during the extraordinary sitting held last Monday.
The bill creates a legal framework allowing employees in public service to be re-employed up to age 75, outlining eligibility criteria and procedural requirements.
The bill applies to both those who are currently employed and those who have previously been employed in the public service, but excludes members of the armed forces, police, judges, and Constitutional/Law-mandated appointees.
The bill also applies to those who were required to retire upon reaching the pensionable age during the seven years preceding the bill coming into effect.
The bill will come into force within a month of its ratification.
