All towers developed under the 4,000-flat social housing project in Hulhumale' by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC) have now been supplied with water and electricity, with 1,262 flats handed over to recipients so far.

The handover process has been expedited following President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s directive to complete the handover of flats before the start of the new academic year on the 27th of this month. The dates for flat handovers are being announced through the official portal.

Providing an update to Mihaaru News, FDC Managing Director Hamdhan Shakeel said 1,262 flats had been handed over as of yesterday, adding that efforts are underway to complete the handover of all flats by the 25th of this month.

Hamdhan confirmed that all 32 towers, each 17 to 18 storeys high, have been fully connected to water and electricity services.

The first flats to be occupied were in the 14th tower of Aman Udhares, where residents have been living since October last year. The flats were constructed by two Indian companies, and keys are handed over after recipients pay the security deposit.

During recent meetings with residents across various neighborhoods in Male', concerns were raised over delays in handing over keys as well as the high rent and security deposits compared to other social housing schemes. In response, President Muizzu ordered a reduction in rent and deposits for the Fahi flats.

Under the adjustment:

  • Two-bedroom flats now cost MVR 7,000 per month, including maintenance, reduced from MVR 8,000
  • The security deposit for two-bedroom flats has been reduced from MVR 15,000 to MVR 6,000
  • Three-bedroom flats are now priced at MVR 10,000 per month, including maintenance, down from MVR 11,500
  • The security deposit for three-bedroom flats has been reduced from MVR 25,000 to MVR 8,500

Recipients will receive three months of rent-free accommodation from the date the keys are handed over. However, maintenance fees must still be paid during this period.
