Former Minister of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, Dr. Aishath Rameela, was officially appointed as the President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM) today.

This appointment follows the unanimous approval of the Parliament during an extraordinary session held yesterday, where all 38 members present voted in her favor. Her nomination was submitted by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu after the position became vacant upon the expiration of former president Mariyam Muna's term.

Dr. Rameela brings a wealth of experience to the commission, having begun her career in the healthcare sector as a nurse in 1990. She previously served as a State Minister for Health during two different administrations and earned her PhD in Social Sciences from Malaysia in 2010.

While she was appointed as the first Agriculture Minister of the current administration, she resigned from her cabinet post in December 2024 to focus on receiving treatment for cancer.
