MDP's Interim Chairperson and Hanimaadhoo MP Abdul Ghafoor Moosa (Gapo) stated last night that there is no doubt that they will win the upcoming Local Council Election and that they will "snatch" the election (much like a fish escaping the clutches of its captive).

During MDP's rally held at the party's hub last night, Ghafoor said that the party is standing strong for the upcoming Local Council Election and Women's Development Committee Election, and that preparations are being done with excitement. He also said that Maldives' major cities are also standing with MDP in order to win the election by a landslide.

Ghafoor went on to say that the people want to work with MDP regarding the election, restore democratic rules in Maldives and to establish a government that will work for the peace and benefit of its people.

Ghafoor also said that ruling PNC have not fulfilled any of their pledges since taking office and have plunged the people into a state of distress.

The assurance I am giving to you is that we hope to snatch the election (much like a fish escaping the clutches of its captive) from this administration.

As per Ghafoor, he has no doubt that MDP will win the Local Council Election. But, Ghafoor also said that what party members need to do now is to put aside their differences.

"What we need to come to terms with is that if we do not move together even with our differences of opinion, we will not win as many seats as we want. And so, we need to look into our shares, come together and work cohesively for the sake of the country and our party," said Ghafoor.

"The assurance I am giving to you is that we hope to snatch the election (much like a fish escaping the clutches of its captive) from this administration."

The differences of opinion within MDP reached its peak due to conflicts between former President Mohamed Nasheed and former President and MDP Advisor Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu) during the primary of the previous Presidential Election. Upon resigning from MDP, Nasheed had registered The Democrats political party with supporters and conducted political activities after he and Solih ran against each other in the Presidential Election primary and after Nasheed was subject to major accusations. MDP lost both the Presidential Election and the Parliament Election as well after the party split from within.

Nasheed and Solih met for the first time last month after the issues that cropped up between them, with them announcing that they have settled their differences and decided to work together to strengthen MDP's operations, strengthen the party with their leadership and increase party members.

MDP is currently preparing for their 16th January primary in order to elect candidates to run for the Local Council Election and Women's Development Committee Election on 4th April.
