Former Vice President of the Maldives Broadcasting Commission, Mohamed Fazeen, has been formally charged in connection with the alleged sexual assault of an employee.
A media official from the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) said yesterday that two charges have been filed against Fazeen:
- Sexual assault
- Touching the body
The case first surfaced early last year following allegations of misconduct involving an employee. Fazeen resigned from his position in March last year after Parliament initiated proceedings to remove him from office.
At the time, Fazeen’s lawyer issued a statement rejecting the allegations, saying the investigation had failed to produce evidence beyond hearsay and that there was no proof linking Fazeen to the claims.
The statement also said Fazeen had carried out his duties impartially from the time of his appointment in March 2021 until his resignation, in line with the objectives of the Broadcasting Commission Act.
Fazeen stated in the letter that he resigned because he could no longer perform his duties independently amid the ongoing controversy.
The employee who made the complaint had earlier told Mihaaru News that they were repeatedly targeted by Fazeen at the workplace. The individual said the incidents caused severe mental distress and led them to stop attending work.
