Efforts are currently underway to transport a Maldivian citizen back to the Maldives after their health deteriorated while performing the Umrah pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, Islamic Minister Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed announced last night.

In a message shared with the Islamic Ministry’s media group, the Minister noted that over 7,000 Maldivians traveled for Umrah during this holiday period and that their overall well-being is generally good.

However, he confirmed that one hospitalized pilgrim is being brought home at the request of their family.

"Insha Allah, the patient will be brought to Malé on the 10th of this month. I would like to express my gratitude for the cooperation being provided by Maldivian and IGMH in this matter," stated Minister Shaheem.

According to official figures, a total of 7,726 individuals were scheduled to depart for Umrah during this past month and the current month to coincide with the major school holidays.

While the majority are completing their pilgrimage safely, it was recently reported that a 62-year-old Maldivian who traveled with the Al-Manasik group passed away in Saudi Arabia last Wednesday.
