The Ministry of Health has announced the construction of 39 new hospitals across various islands in Maldives.

Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Health Minister Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim said the government has launched major structural development projects to upgrade atoll hospitals and health facilities, many of which are currently dilapidated and constrained by space.

“Some of these hospitals are entirely new buildings, while others involve upgrades or expansions of existing facilities,” Minister Nazim said.

In addition to the 39 hospitals, the government is constructing 19 new health centers and undertaking 89 building extensions and upgrades.

A total of 22 projects are planned, including eight new hospitals, five health center buildings, and nine extensions and renovations.

Over the past two years, dialysis services have been introduced in nine islands, including:

  • Baa Atoll Dharavandhoo
  • Noonu Atoll Velidhoo
  • Shaviyani Atoll Hospital
  • Haa Alifu Atoll Ihavandhoo
  • Alifu Dhaalu Atoll Hospital
  • Alifu Alifu Atoll Hospital
  • Meemu Atoll Muli Hospital
  • Thaa Atoll Hospital
  • Gaafu Alifu Atoll Hospital

Laboratory services and additional dialysis beds have also been established in six other islands.

Minister Nazim emphasized that the projects are part of a nationwide effort to improve healthcare infrastructure, ensuring atoll hospitals can meet the needs of their communities.
