President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has forwarded the name of former Agriculture Minister Dr Aishath Rameela to parliament for approval for appointment as President of the Human Rights Commission of Maldives.
The letter was read out in today's parliament sitting and forward for review to the Human Rights and Gender Committee.
A meeting of the Human Rights and Gender Committee is scheduled for today, where they are expected to reach a decision on this appointment.
Rameela began her career as a nurse in 1990. She later served twice as a State Minister at the Health Ministry. In 2010, she obtained a PhD in social sciences from Malaysia.
Rameela also served as the first Agriculture Minister of this administration. She resigned from the post as she was undergoing treatment for cancer.
Parliament approved Rameela's appointment as a member of HRCM in October last year. She was officially appointed on December 3.
