Over 4,800 breast cancer cases in 4 years: IGMH

As per the data shared last Tuesday, 4,588 cases were identified through out-patient tests and 231 cases through in-patient tests.

Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital has revealed that over 4,800 breast cancer cases were identified over the past four years. 

The information was disclosed under an RTI request submitted by Mihaaru News. As per the data shared last Tuesday, 4,588 cases were identified through out-patient tests and 231 cases through in-patient tests. 

Breast cancer is the prevalent form of breast cancer amongst women in Maldives and globally. As per the information shared by IGMH, 4,819 cases of breast cancer were diagnosed between January 1, 2022 and December 15, 2025. 

The youngest patient diagnosed amongst in-patient cases was a 13 year old. The eldest were two women aged 81. 

Amongst out-patient cases, a one year old child was also diagnosed with breast cancer. 

The highest number of cases within out-patient cases were aged 47, with the number reaching 145. The eldest patient is aged 88. 

Through out these four years, 14 breast cancer patients passed away, according to hospital records. 

As per WHO statistics, 670,000 breast cancer patients worldwide died in 2022. 

Half of breast cancer patients have no other risk factors besides age and gender. As per WHO statistics, in 2022, breast cancer was the most common form of cancer amongst women in 157 out of 185 countries. 

0.5 to 1 percent of breast cancer patients are men. Early detection and rehabilitation are vital to reduce breast cancer risks and support health.
