Sheikh Mohamed Ibrahim (Naifaree) has been appointed Waiz Musharik at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, the ministry has said.

Waiz Mushariqs are appointed to promote religious awareness and uphold Islamic values.

The ministry’s permanent secretary, Ahmed Adeel, said the appointment was made on Tuesday. He said Sheikh Mohamed Ibrahim had previously been involved in religious work both in collaboration with the ministry and independently.

Before his appointment, the Sheikh served as an Islamic studies teacher at Madrasat-ul-Ifthithaah. Adeel said he lost his eyesight and had been on no pay leave for the past four years, prompting the ministry to request the Civil Service Commission to transfer him to the new post.

“The decision was taken because the Sheikh continued to engage in religious activities despite losing his sight, and the ministry did not want such a dedicated individual’s service to go unused,” Adeel said.

In his new role, Sheikh Mohamed Ibrahim will take part in various religious programmes organized by the ministry.

The Sheikh has faced serious health challenges in recent years, including the loss of vision in both eyes following surgeries in 2019 and 2023, as well as other medical conditions such as a tumour and heart problems.

According to Ehee, a humanitarian non-governmental organisation, Sheikh Mohamed Ibrahim supports a child and currently relies on the state disability allowance, along with assistance from family members and well-wishers. The organisation said Maldivians had raised funds to support his medical treatment abroad after delays in receiving care.

Sheikh Mohamed Ibrahim has authored several religious books. His works include Hisnul Muslim, Kitab al-Siyam, Nabee Beykalunge Tharika, Tauheed Khulaasaa and Kitab al-Salat. He received his religious education in Medina.
