Zakat House has signed an agreement with the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) to facilitate the collection of property zakat.
The agreement was signed at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Islamic Affairs on Wednesday afternoon.
Minister of Islamic affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, signed on behalf of Zakat House, while the commissioner general of taxation, Hassan Zareer, signed on behalf of MIRA.
Speaking at the event, Shaheem described the agreement as a “historic” step, noting that MIRA’s role would be crucial when the Zakat Act is implemented. He thanked MIRA officials and staff for their cooperation in the collection of zakat, charity and waqf funds.
Shaheem added that a representative from MIRA would be included in the Zakat Council and said cooperation between the authority and the ministry would be further strengthened.
Zareer said MIRA was pleased to partner in efforts to strengthen the zakat system, adding that the initiative would help increase public trust in the authority.
