The government will begin disbursing a monthly allowance of MVR 2,000 to thalassemia patients from tomorrow.
The decision was unveiled at a ceremony held to announce new programmes being implemented by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) in line with pledges made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
Speaking at the event at Dharumavantha Hospital, Health Minister Ibrahim Nazim described the initiative as “historic”, saying it marked a significant step in strengthening social protection and healthcare in Maldives.
President Muizzu had previously pledged to introduce a monthly allowance for thalassemia patients while addressing a meeting of the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) at Artificial Beach.
At the time, he said the funding would be allocated from the next year’s budget.
