Nearly 500 people have died from stroke over the past four years, according to figures released by Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Hospital data covering the period from 2022 to 15 December this year show that 4,633 patients were diagnosed with stroke during that time. Of these, 1,849 cases were diagnosed among admitted patients, while 2,784 cases were identified through outpatient (OPD) services.
The data show that the highest number of admitted stroke cases was recorded among patients aged 67, with 63 people in that age group diagnosed during the period. This age group also accounted for the highest number of treatments this year, including 13 women and 12 men.
Among non-admitted patients, the highest number of diagnoses was recorded at 62 years of age, with 163 people—105 women and 58 men—diagnosed through OPD services.
The youngest inpatient diagnosed with stroke was a one-year-old infant, while the oldest inpatient was 99 years old.
The youngest admitted patient diagnosed was a three year old child, with such cases recorded in both 2022 and this year. The oldest person diagnosed with stroke was 96 years old.
According to the data, 493 people died from stroke at IGMH during the four-year period. Of those, 296 were men and 197 were women.
The youngest recorded death was an 18 year old woman. Two patients of that age died from stroke in 2023.
Last year recorded the highest number of stroke related deaths, with 151 fatalities reported at IGMH.
