The government has decided to establish dedicated social centres in islands to support the elderly and promote healthy and active lifestyles.
Social and Family Minister Dr Aishath Shiham said at a press conference at the President’s Office that discussions are currently underway with island councils regarding the development of such facilities.
She said 77 island councils have so far expressed interest in setting up social centres for senior citizens.
“Seventy-seven councils have expressed interest in establishing gathering spaces for senior citizens, and we are working with them on how these centres can be organized,” the minister said.
Dr Shiham noted that training programmes will be conducted in islands where social centres are expected to be developed within the next six months.
The centres will operate in a similar manner to the former Qur’an Centre in Malé, with services made accessible to elderly residents in the islands, she added.
Currently, the Israhvehinge Naadhee — the social centre for senior citizens in Male' offers sports and recreational activities, counselling services, and opportunities for elderly people to share experiences.
