Five criminal charges have been filed against a teacher accused of sexually assaulting a female student, the Prosecutor General’s Office (PG) has said.
In a statement, a PG media official said charges were filed on 18 December against Nabil Abdulla, 46, of M. Southern Beach, in connection with the alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl.
The charges include:
- sexual assault of a child while in a position of trust
- knowingly entering an unauthorised place
- obstruction of law enforcement and other state functions
- entering a residence with the intent to commit sexual acts involving a child
- possession of pornographic material
Nabil, who is a teacher at Ameeniyya School, is accused of entering the child’s room and remaining there for an extended period before sexually assaulting her.
According to police, the incident occurred on 21 October, when Nabil went to the student’s home in Hulhumale' under the pretext of providing tuition. When the girl’s mother opened the door, he allegedly fled into a bathroom and later escaped the residence.
The incident was reported to police by the child’s family. Nabil was arrested later that night on a street in Hulhumale', and his remand in custody was subsequently extended.
