The government is building shelters in three locations to temporarily accommodate victims of domestic violence, the minister of social and family development, Dr Aishath Shiham, has said.
Speaking at a press conference at the President’s Office, Minister Shiham said incidents of abuse and derogatory remarks against women on social media had increased, prompting the need for stronger protective measures. She said awareness programmes were also being carried out to address the issue.
The minister said work was under way to establish temporary shelters for victims and their families. Construction has reached an advanced stage in Addu City’s Hithadhoo, while a call has been issued for contractors to build a similar facility in Hulhumale'. Once work begins there, another temporary shelter will be established in Inguraidhoo, she said.
Shiham added that amendments to the Domestic Violence Prevention Act and the Sexual Harassment and Abuse Act were currently being drafted, and that the Gender Equality Act is scheduled for review next year.
