Opposition MDP said yesterday that their internal issues will be resolved and that they will secure most of the upcoming Local Council Election.

During yesterday morning's press conference held by MDP, Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir stated that there has always been differences of opinion within MDP. Nevertheless, he said that their democratic regulations and principles as an opposing party are always upheld.

"You would all know by now that there has always been some differences of opinion within MDP. Even so, the citizens have seen that democratic regulations and principles are present within MDP as an opposing political party," said Mauroof.

"We at MDP are moving forward in coming to terms and agreeing with each other, and solving matters quickly."

Mauroof stated that the issues that arose between MDP's senior leaders, former President Mohamed Nasheed and former President and MDP Advisor Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (Ibu), have also been solved.

"The result of this is us coming out in full force during the Local Council Election, with us working to accomplish and win most of the election by the grace of God, and is something we remind all members of MDP and Maldivian citizens," said Mauroof.

Nasheed and Solih decided last Wednesday to put aside the differences of opinion they had and assured they would work together in order to strengthen MDP operations.

That was the first time the two had met after their political conflict in 2023 during the Presidential Election. Upon resigning from MDP, Nasheed had registered The Democrats political party with supporters and conducted political activities after he and Solih ran against each other in the Presidential Election primary and after Nasheed was subject to major accusations. MDP lost both the Presidential Election and the Parliament Election as well after the party split from within.

MDP is preparing to hold their primary on January 16th in order to elect their candidate to run for the upcoming Local Council and Women's Development Committee elections.
