Manta Air has been fined MVR 20,000 for carrying out a seaplane platform construction project in Raa Atoll Ifuru without approval from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
In a statement issued, EPA said Manta Aviation Pvt Ltd violated regulations on environmental impact assessment by proceeding with the construction without completing the required approval process.
Under the Regulations on Environmental Impact Assessment, projects that are not explicitly covered by Environmental Impact Reporting requirements but may cause noticeable environmental change or negative impact must first be screened and approved by the authority before implementation.
However, EPA said Manta Air continued construction of the seaplane platform at Ifuru, which already hosts a domestic airport and a resort, without completing the mandatory regulatory stages.
Following an investigation, the authority imposed a fine of MVR 20,000 in line with penalties for first time offenders. The fine was issued on the 21st of this month.
EPA has ordered Manta Air to settle the fine within 30 days and advised the company to ensure that all future project activities are carried out in accordance with regulations governing environmental impact assessments and reporting.
