National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) has amended its regulations to increase state allowances for single mothers and fathers living in poverty, raising payments to MVR 3,000 per child for up to four children.

Under the revised regulations, eligible single parents can receive up to MVR 12,000 per month, with an annual maximum of MVR 144,000. The amendment was gazetted and will come into effect on January 1.

Previously, single parents were paid MVR 1,000 per child per month, with a maximum ceiling of MVR 10,000.

Another change introduced in the amendment allows the allowance to be deposited into a bank account other than the applicant’s own account, if they choose.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced in October that the allowance for single mothers and fathers would be increased from January as part of his presidential pledges. While he had earlier stated that the maximum allowance would be capped at MVR 12,000 per person.
