Expatriate arrested for illegal cigarette sales

An expatriate has been arrested for the illegal sale of cigarettes in the police's operation at Hulhumale'.

The Riveli Operation has apprehended 44 year old Bangladeshi Shukoor Ali.

As per the police, he was arrested in an operation aimed at expatriates who conduct illegal business with alcohol, drugs and those who are living in Maldives illegally.

When he was arrested and searched during the operation, police said they found 10 packs of cigarettes, more than USD 3,200 and more than MVR 2,900 on him. When his premises was searched, the police had found 32 cigarette cartons and 13 packs of cigarettes.

The police said that he had been imprisoned for 15 days once he had been taken to court for sentencing, with the case being investigated.
