Police have said that there are Maldivians who have established themselves in neighboring countries such as Malaysia and Thailand in order to send drugs to Maldives, and work is being done via Interpol to find said individuals.

During the Drug Enforcement Department's press conference, Chief Inspector of Police Ahmed Naif said that they have identified three Maldivians in Malaysia who have been concealing drugs in electronic devices and kitchen utensils such as ovens and pots, and shipping them via air and sea cargo.

Naif said that there are individuals with considerable criminal records among them.

He stated that even if there are people who send drugs from other countries, such individuals who commit such criminal acts will have an investigation launched against them after bringing them back to Maldives via a Red Notice from Interpol.

He also stated that they have sought aid from various nations in apprehending those who have fled after being accused of drug charges, going abroad as guarantors and in cases of kidnapping.

The police have also expressed concern over a growing trend in drug trafficking.

As per Naif, individuals who do not have a job to go after finishing school have been invited to act as drug mules from closed groups in social media. And so, Naif has requested parents be especially mindful of such things.
