Ministry of Transport has announced that vehicle owners will no longer need to submit a separate garage permit when registering their vehicles.
Under the updated rules, which take effect from 1 January, applicants will only need to provide:
- Permission to use the building as a garage, issued by Malé City Council or the Housing Development Corporation (HDC).
- A no-objection letter from the garage owner.
- Identification of the garage owner.
Previously, applicants were required to submit three documents, including a separate vehicle garage permit, which often meant applying to two different agencies to complete the process. The ministry said the change was made to simplify registration and reduce administrative difficulties for residents.
The ministry added that vehicles brought in before garages became compulsory in 2009, or those registered without a separate garage, can now be transferred to new owners without additional garage documentation.
The ministry also clarified that while document requirements have been relaxed, garage inspections will continue as usual.
