North Galolhu constituency and MDP member Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo) has requested today the matter where those who are ill and without caregivers are "being left" in hospitals are on the rise, with him requesting the Parliament question the heads of relevant institutions.

In the letter sent to Speaker Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Ibrahim wrote that Maldivians and expatriates who are ill and taken to hospitals and health centers do not have caregivers. He also wrote that nurses and ward attendants need to care for such individuals.

Ibrahim stated that some without caregivers are those who cannot even go to the bathroom by themselves.

Ibrahim highlighted in the letter the issues that crop up when no caregivers are present for those who are admitted into hospitals and health centers.

Issues highlighted by Ibrahim in the letter

  • No caregivers being present for those who are ill admitted to the "emergency" or "ward" sections.
  • Nurses and ward attendants having to aid the ill without caregivers.
  • Such individuals to be aided when they want to go to the bathroom or to be fed.
  • Those who are ill being left at the hospital even after being discharged due to no one being available to take them home.
  • Due to this, beds are not vacated, leading to those who are newly admitted not getting space.
  • Treatment being delayed due to next of kin not being there to make medical decisions.
  • Due to a "health insurance" scheme not being available to ill expatriates, immediate treatment that could save lives are delayed.

Ibrahim highlighted various other issues and requested the relevant parties at the Gender Ministry and the Home Ministry to attend the Committee on Social Affairs to be questioned.
