President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced last night that the decision has been made to develop a race track next to the highway that links Male' and Hulhumale'.
Developing a race track of international quality in Male', Addu and northern Maldives is a presidential pledge of President Muizzu's as racing has become a sport that a lot of youth take part in.
While answering a question posed by an attendee at the "Youth Coffee with President" event last night, the President stated that a racing track will be developed in Male' and Addu.
The President also stated that an area for the track has been designated in the Male' region, with the project to be awarded to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL).
President Muizzu said building the track near residential areas would cause difficulties for residents, and that it will instead be constructed beside the highway, in an open space outside the neighbourhood.
President Muizzu said that MACL will begin the construction of the race track very soon.
The previous administration had decided on developing a race track at Thilafushi and even handed over a plot to the Youth Ministry. However, the project has since been brought to a halt.
While racing was permitted in Hulhumale' in the past, that permission has since been revoked due to a dangerous accident that occurred.
