Environmental Regulatory Authority (ERA) has warned that action will be taken against reclamation and dredging projects in Male' Atoll amid a rise in public complaints.
In a statement issued on last night, the authority said it has received a large number of complaints regarding lagoon reclamation and dredging projects being carried out with its approval.
The complaints include allegations that projects are proceeding without adequate measures to mitigate environmental harm, that sand is being mined outside permitted areas, and that work has continued during adverse weather conditions, including on days when the Maldives Meteorological Service has issued yellow alerts.
ERA said it is monitoring the projects in response to the complaints.
“Following the complaints received, we are investigating the matters and monitoring the projects. Legal action will be taken against parties found to be in violation of permit conditions,” the authority said.
ERA urged project developers to strictly comply with the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) requirements and other permits issued by the authority.
The warning comes as reclamation work continues on Hulhumale' Phase III and Rasmalé under government housing projects. The ERA did not specify which projects may be in breach of permits.
The government has previously said the projects are being carried out in accordance with approved EIAs.
