The main opposition party, the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), has made the strategic decision to bring forward its primary elections to January 16, 2026. 

This move effectively cancels the previously established timeline, which had the internal polls set for January 30. 

The shift was prompted by the Elections Commission’s announcement that the formal candidate nomination window for the nationwide Local Council Elections will open on January 17, leaving a brief 14-day period for parties to finalize their rosters. By holding the primary on Friday, January 16, from 2:30 PM to 8:00 PM, the MDP aims to ensure its winning candidates are ready to submit their paperwork immediately when the national window opens.

This adjustment highlights the logistical pressure facing political parties as they prepare for the general election on April 4. 

The MDP noted that while the old timeline is void, a finalized schedule for subsequent steps will be released once the Elections Commission issues its permanent electoral report. 

In the meantime, the party remains focused on vetting its internal contenders; a preliminary list of candidates for the contested constituencies is expected to be published tomorrow, followed by a 24-hour window for formal complaints before the final ballot is set.

The political atmosphere is particularly charged in the capital, where the MDP’s internal race for the Malé City Mayoral ticket has become the primary focus. Incumbent Mayor Adam Azim is facing a high-profile challenge from Ali Azim, the former Member of Parliament for the Medhu Henveiru constituency. Both heavyweights have already launched aggressive campaigns across the city, signaling a competitive primary. 

As the MDP accelerates its pace, the ruling People’s National Congress (PNC) is also moving quickly, with its own primary elections scheduled to take place much earlier, on December 27.
