Parliament to look into STELCO fire fatality

North Galolhu constituency and MDP member Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo) has submitted a letter to the Parliament requesting information regarding the electrocution and passing of a STELCO employee at the company's old power house.

North Galolhu constituency and MDP member of parliament Mohamed Ibrahim (Kudoo) has submitted a letter to the Parliament requesting information regarding the electrocution and death of a STELCO employee at the company's old power house in Hulhumale'.

In the letter sent to the Speaker of Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla, Ibrahim requests the incident be looked into by Parliament's State Owned Enterprise Committee and to review STELCO's work environment.

Some of the information requested by Parliament:

  • Whether the family of the deceased has been compensated
  • Whether STELCO will aid the family
  • Whether STELCO's work environment safety has been checked
  • Safety regulation
  • Details regarding the investigation into the matter
  • Details regarding steps taken that allowed such an incident to take place repeatedly
  • Risk Reduction and Risk Assessment regulation
  • The system in providing medical safety to employees

Ahmed Azmeel, 43, who worked as a supervisor at STELCO, passed away while undergoing treatment at Bangkok Hospital, Thailand after getting electrocuted and suffering burn injuries in the 26th November fire at the old Hulhumale' power station.

He was buried in Maldives after his funeral was held last night.

The incident occurred while Azmeel was working on resolving an issue with a switch gear at the old power station in Hulhumale', with him suffering severe burns from the fire incident and having been flown to Thailand for further treatment on the night of 30th November.

It has been reported that STELCO covered all medical expenses for Azmeel. This includes his transfer to Thailand on the Air Ambulance. STELCO has previously said that they would closely monitor his treatment, and provide all possible assistance through his family.

STELCO has also stated that they will look into the cause of the incident and take necessary measures to prevent such incidents in future.

On 26th October, some areas in Male' and Hulhumale' experienced a power outage as some feeders turned off due to a medium voltage panel issue at the old power house in Hulhumale'.
