Major amendments have been brought to the Expatriate Employment Regulations, including banning foreign employment for several jobs including nurses, hair dressers, teachers and accountants.

The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology yesterday published the amended regulations in the government gazette. The regulation includes a list of jobs that cannot be filled by expatriates, compiled by the cabinet. It also details the durations that will be granted before cancelling quotas for those jobs.

Jobs for which quotas will be cancelled, and no new quotas issued after two years:

  • Hair dresser
  • Beautician
  • Baby sitter
  • Personal trainer
  • Electrician
  • Guest Relations Officer (English)
  • Tour guides
  • Accountants
  • Imam

Jobs for which quotas will be cancelled after three years:

  • Diver
  • Nurse
  • Building Inspector
  • Surveyor
  • Site Supervisor
  • Pilot

Jobs for which quotas will be cancelled after four years:

  • Electrical engineer
  • Dive instructor

Jobs for which quotas will be cancelled after five years:

  • Housekeeping manager
  • Human Resource manager
  • Front Office manager
  • Primary and secondary teachers

The government has deported a high number of expatriates under its efforts to identify and take action against expatriates living and working illegally in the country. At present, authorities are working to identify and shut down illegal businesses being operated by expatriates.

Biometric data has also been collected of all expatriates in Maldives. Under this, biometric data has now been obtained of 191,723 expatriates, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu said earlier this month. Any expatriates found to have not provided this data by now will be deported, he said.
