Drugs worth more than MVR 2 million have been seized in an attempt to smuggle them into the Maldives by air, Maldives Customs Service said today.
Customs officials intercepted the drugs at Velana International Airport on Saturday. The seized drugs included approximately three kilograms of cannabis.
According to Customs, the street value of the drugs is estimated at MVR 2.4 million.
No arrests have been made in connection with the incident so far, and investigations are ongoing.
Earlier this month, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu approved amendments to the Drugs Act that allow the death penalty for individuals convicted of importing or trafficking drugs above a specified quantity.
