The MIFCO Fish Processing Facility in Fuvahmulah is set to open next week, the company announced.

MIFCO confirmed in a statement that work on the factory is now completed and preparations are underway for its opening.

The development of an ice plant in Fuvahmulah began in 2019, with a private entity starting to develop a fish processing factory next door in 2021. However, these efforts came to a stop for various reasons, MIFCO said.

As this work was halted, the Fuvahmulah City Council requested the government to recommence fisheries related projects in 2022, which was then contracted to MIFCO, they said.

The work, however, was once again stalled for a long period, and was resumed last August after MIFCO CEO Faruhath Shaheer visited Fuvahmulah, and assured the factory would be completed before the end of the year, the statement reads.

The company further said that with work on the factory now being completed, the Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has now granted permits for its operations, certifying it as upholding health safety standards to the highest degree.

MIFCO stated that in the next week, fish will be purchased and processing commenced at the Fuvahmulah factory.

MIFCO stated that its goal is for the factory to offer Fuvahmulah residents safe fish packaging, reliable products, and to help maximize profits from fisheries.
