Following strong public criticism, speed breakers on Hulhumale' roads have been removed last night.
Many complained about inconveniences caused by the speed breakers placed on the Hulhumale' streets last September. The speed breakers were placed then to reduce vehicle speeds due to heavy traffic and a high prevalence of accidents. However, people who opposed the placement of speed breakers claimed that driving over them, even at low speeds, caused back pain and other difficulties.
Due to these reasons, many called for the government to remove these speed breakers, which had been affixed through drilling holes in the tar-laid streets. The same concern was raised in meetings that President Dr Mohamed Muizzu recently held with residents of Male' region districts.
Housing Development Corporation earlier asserted that the speed breakers had been placed to ensure road safety. At the time, they said that over 30 such speed breakers had been placed across Hulhumale'.
Although the complaints were ignored at their height, the speed breakers were finally removed last night. No official reason for reversing the decision has been made public yet.
With increased numbers of road accidents, HDC has also brought changes to the traffic flow in Hulhumale'. Under these efforts, roundabouts have been placed at major intersections, and one way lanes have been designated on streets.
