Three people including Kendhoo MP and Yellowfin Tuna Union General Secretary Mauroof Zakir have been arrested, and two fishing vessels seized, amid the ongoing fishermen’s protest calling on the government to resume the purchase of yellowfin tuna through MIFCO.
A police media official confirmed that the three individuals were arrested on charges of disobeying police orders and obstructing police duty. However, police did not disclose why the two boats were taken into custody.
“Two boats have been taken into police custody in connection with the ongoing protest. Three persons have been arrested on charges of disobedience to police orders and obstructing police duty,” the spokesperson said.
Earlier today, officers boarded several vessels as part of an operation conducted jointly with Maldives Immigration to identify expatriates believed to be participating in the protest.
A police official told Mihaaru News that foreign crew members were observed taking part and had been instructed not to engage in the demonstration before their information was collected.
MP Mauroof had told RaajjeTV yesterday that expatriates on board the vessels were legitimate crew members residing on the boats.
“There are expats in these boats, that is not a lie. There are expats under quota. Most of them, I believe, are in the valid quota. They live on these boats,” he said.
The protest began yesterday morning, with fishermen from 49 vessels gathering near the Hulhumale' Kannelli Jetty. Vessels carrying banners attempted to sail towards Male' later in the afternoon, but were stopped by the MNDF Coast Guard.
The boats have since remained anchored outside the northern harbour entrance.
