Case of teacher assaulting student under investigation

A foreign teacher at Addu High School has been suspended after allegedly grabbing a student by the neck and hitting him during an altercation inside a classroom.

A video of the incident was circulated on social media today, prompting the Ministry of Education to refer the case to police.

The footage shows the student also striking the teacher, after which the teacher had begun hitting the student while several other students were also present in the classroom at the time.

According to information received by Mihaaru News, the incident occurred during a Grade 12 B Tech class and involved an Indian teacher.

Education Minister Dr Ismail Shafeeu told Mihaaru News that the teacher had been suspended and the case reported to police.

He said the cause of the altercation was still unclear and that the ministry was investigating. Necessary action would be taken in line with laws and regulations, he added.
